Endocrinology & Metabolism‘s remarkable faculty and staff are spotlighted in the most recent edition of Medicine Matters. Five members of the division are featured, all of whom reflect the division’s strength as a whole:
- Ayotunde Dokun, MD (recipient of a 5-year R01 research grant from the NIH)
- Brandon Kemp (honored with a Leonard Sandridge All-University Staff Award)
- Susan Kirk, MD (appointed to chair the ACGME’s Institutional Review Committee, a prominent national-level position)
- Jennifer Kirby, MD, PhD and Zhuo Fu, PhD (both are profiled in this edition)
Endocrinology has long been a clinical and research powerhouse at UVA, with many eminent faculty members past and present — including Bob Carey, John Marshall and Michael Thorner, after whom our Carey-Marshall-Thorner Research & Scholars Day is named.
This year’s Research & Scholars Day, held on May 11, was once again a showcase for the incredible breadth and depth of talent among DOM’s residents, fellows and graduate students. Many thanks to all the trainees who participated, and to the faculty members who mentor them — and especially to DOM’s vice chair for research, Eric Houpt, for the remarkable job he does overseeing DOM’s research mission.
As we approach the end of another academic and fiscal year, I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all members of the department for the hard work you do — for the most part, quietly and without fanfare. The strength and quality of our enterprise depends upon many individuals doing their best for the good of the whole. Each of you is valued, and essential.
Mitch
