(l-r) Eugene Corbett, Eve Bargmann, Simon Lehtinen and Allison Lyons taught eye exam workshops at the 2016 Internal Medicine Meeting in Washington, DC.

The American College of PhysiciansInternal Medicine Meeting is the largest gathering of practicing internists, attended by more than 6,500 internal medicine specialists and subspecialists and offering more than 200 sessions on clinical and practice management topics. These include clinical skills workshops that help internists update or advance their patient exam skills. The eye exam workshop, in particular, has grown in popularity since it was first offered in 2007.

Internal Medicine 2016 was held in Washington, D.C., from May 5-7, with workshops offered at the Waxman Clinical Skills Center in the Washington Convention Center. UVA Division of General, Geriatric, Palliative & Hospital Medicine faculty members Eve Bargmann, Allison Lyons, Simon Lehtinen and Gene Corbett taught a total of 22 small-group ophthalmoscopic skills sessions over a two-and-a-half day period. Each hour and a half session had 4 to 8 attendees, so together the four physicians trained more than 100 participants.

Dr. Corbett says the eye exam workshop is an “intensively interactive session in which physicians learn to carefully observe both the anterior eye and retinal structures.” He notes that as the demand for the workshop has grown, so has the need for instructors. “Very special thanks go to our faculty for their participation and exceptional teaching skills,” says Dr. Corbett.
