Dean H. Kedes, MD, PhD, is director of UVA’s Medical Scientist Training Program and holds joint appointments in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology and the Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health, Department of Medicine. Dr. Kedes’ research focuses on understanding Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS) and the virus which causes it, human herpes virus or KSHV.

CME learning objectives:

  1. Identify the etiologic agent underlying Kaposi’s sarcoma, Multicentric Castleman’s Disease, and Primary Effusion Lymphoma.
  2. Recognize the probable primary cellular targets of Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV/HHV8) that may be precursors to KSHV-induced B-cell tumors.
  3. Predict molecular mechanisms that could allow non-integrating DNA viruses to persist in patients.

Medicine Grand Rounds is offered every Wednesday throughout the year by the UVA Department of Medicine, in association with UVA’s Office of Continuing Medical Education. CME credit is available; instructions and forms are available at the event.
