Gerald I. Shulman, MD, PhD, FACP, MACE, is the George R. Cowgill Professor of Medicine (Endocrinology) and Professor of Cellular And Molecular Physiology at the Yale School of Medicine. He is also an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute; co-director of the Yale Diabetes Research Center; and director of the Yale Mouse Metabolic Phenotyping Center.
Dr. Shulman has pioneered the use of magnetic resonance spectroscopy to non-invasively examine intracellular glucose and fat metabolism in humans for the first time. Using this approach he has conducted ground breaking basic and clinical investigative studies on the cellular mechanisms of insulin resistance that have led to several paradigm shifts in our understanding of type 2 diabetes.
CME learning objectives:
1. Understand the role of ectopic lipid in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes and the metabolic syndrome.
2. Understand the molecular mechanisms of lipid-‐
induced liver and muscle insulin resistance.
3. Understand the role of muscle insulin resistance in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and
dyslipidemia.
