Heart Strong

February is Heart Month, and our featured division, Cardiovascular Medicine, is on the frontlines of both heart research and cardiac care. A 2015 addition to our CV faculty, Matt Wolf, MD, PhD, is profiled in this issue; recruited from Duke, he is doing innovative research in the area of cardiovascular genetics, and heads up CV’s Cardiovascular Genetics Clinic. Other CV faculty continue to expand the array of imaging modalities and treatment options for our cardiac patients.

The CV division also has some noteworthy achievements to celebrate — including eight years of life-saving heart care in the Dominican Republic, under the leadership of Scott Lim. The Dominican Republic Heart Mission (highlighted in this issue) not only serves thousands of needy people each year, but is also a valuable training tool for our fellows and residents. And they are passing on their knowledge to physician-colleagues in the DR.

Congratulations to CV’s Ellen Keeley for being honored by our IM residents with an American College of Physicians teaching award. I’d also like to recognize all the CV faculty who have participated in the nbc29 “House Call” series over the last couple of years, which provides valuable information to our local community and helps build a bridge between the division (and our department, and the Medical Center) and those we serve.

I’d also like to congratulate Hem-Onc’s Erika Ramsdale for her appointment to the new DOM position of associate chair for diversity and inclusion – and thank her for taking on this vital role. Kudos, as well, to my Division of Nephrology colleague Rasheed Balogun, whose dedicated efforts to develop a “sister” program with a renal unit in a Nigerian hospital have been recognized by the International Society of Nephrology with its highest rating.

Finally, deep thanks to all of our DOM faculty and staff — especially Jerry Donowitz and Brian Uthlaut — who worked incredibly hard to ensure a successful resident interview season.

And to all our residents, fellows, grad students and postdocs: don’t forget to submit your abstracts by March 16th for the Carey-Marshall-Thorner Research and Scholars Day in May!
