Tara Herring, CV Fiscal & Research Manager

I was born and grew up here in Central Virginia. In fact, I currently live in Greene County near property that has been in my family for over 200 years. My father’s family has resided in the area since the 1740s (before there even was a Greene County — it was then part of Orange). My grandfather many-times removed on my mother’s side was one of the first magistrates in the county.

What do you like about your job?

The people. Every day I get to come in and work with a group of extremely dedicated individuals who operate as a team, helping to not only lift up each other but work to ensure that our division shines.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Waltz. I have always considered it the most elegant dance.

Proudest achievement outside the professional realm?

God has given my husband Gary — who also works at UVA, in Facilities Management — and me the opportunity to raise two wonderful children. Teenagers are a handful but we wouldn’t trade them for anything.

What’s a story your family tells about you?

When I was a toddler, I used to love Sonny and Cher. I would stand in front of the television and sway back and forth attempting to get my hair to move the same way as Cher’s. I never did get the hang of it.

What are you usually doing on the weekends?

Depending upon the season, you might find me at one of my daughter’s dance exhibitions, courtside cheering my son on in basketball, or poolside under an umbrella reading a great book.

mountaindewWhat’s one thing you always have in your fridge?

I am addicted to Mountain Dew. You can always find a case in my refrigerator.

Words to live by?

Treat others the way that you would like to be treated. One of my favorite phrases from childhood is “laughter is the best medicine.”

What about you would surprise us?

When I’m concentrating and a little stressed, I put my headphones on at my desk; and if I’m not careful, I might belt out a tune. The old phrase “whistle while you work” — well I think you might find me doing that too!
