William Brady, MD, professor of emergency medicine and cardiovascular medicine, was featured locally, across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing why cold weather doesn’t directly cause illnesses.

Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Brady says cold weather itself doesn’t make you sick. “While the cold doesn’t cause you to get sick, the cold creates situations where we have a greater chance of encountering a virus and then have a lesser chance of being able to keep it out of our bodies and defend ourselves,” Dr. Brady said.

Dr. Brady explained that factors such as dry air, closer contact with others indoors, the body using more energy to stay warm, and viruses thriving in cold conditions can all raise the risk of catching and spreading illnesses.
