The University of Virginia hosted the inaugural Focused Ultrasound (FUS) Innovation Summit on June 4, 2026. The event was organized by the UVA Focused Ultrasound Center of Excellence with support from the Charlottesville-based Focused Ultrasound Foundation.
Focused ultrasound is an innovative medical technology that replaces scalpels with soundwaves. At the summit, experts in FUS gathered to share the latest advances and discuss the vast potential of the technology to shape the future of medicine

NBC 29 and CBS 19 covered the event and interviewed summit participant, WNBA Hall of Famer and Olympic gold medalist Pamela McGee, who received focused ultrasound treatment and expressed gratitude for the outstanding care she has received at UVA.
UVA Health was one of the earliest pioneers in the field of focused ultrasound, with research prompting the federal Food and Drug Administration to approve the technology to treat Parkinson’s symptoms, essential tremor (a common movement disorder) and other conditions. UVA Health has also launched the world’s first center devoted specifically to the potential of focused ultrasound to enhance immunotherapy for treating cancer. Many other potential applications are now being studied and are in various stages of development.
