Two faculty members of the UVA School of Medicine were highlighted recently in Medscape, a leading online global platform providing medical news, expert insights, and educational resources.
Patrick Jackson, MD, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine’s Division of Infectious Diseases, talked with Medscape about what research has shown to be the best approach to preventing measles.
Recently, there has been a concerning increase in measles outbreaks, prompting some to advocate for the use of vitamin A as a preventive measure, often recommending cod liver oil as a source. However, Dr. Jackson disagrees, arguing that cod liver oil is not a viable treatment option for measles.

Medscape spoke with Mo Nadkarni, MD, a professor in the Department of Medicine and chief of the Division of General, Geriatric, Palliative, and Hospital Medicine, about the ongoing increase in diabetes and other chronic health conditions.
Dr. Nadkarni has over 30 years of experience in practice and has closely observed the growing prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes. “The increase in diabetes can be directly linked to the increase in obesity and the decrease in exercise,” said Dr. Nadkarni.
