Steven Munger, PhD
Steven D. Munger, PhD, professor and co-director of research in the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, spoke with USA Today about how weight-loss (GLP-1) drugs can affect your sense of taste.
A number of patients have reported that the drugs, which manage blood sugar and treat obesity, have muted or altered tastes. Dr. Munger notes that taste changes vary from person to person. For some, sensitivity to a particular taste may increase, for others it may decrease, and for some it may not change at all.
“Increasing the sensory input of spiciness or taste helps to partially offset the loss of the sensations,” Dr. Munger said. “However, others can find (some) sensations to be overwhelming and out of balance, and they will actually prefer foods that are more bland. There is a lot of individuality at work here.”
