Paul Matherne, MD, MBA, a professor of practice for Darden School of Business and professor emeritus at UVA School of Medicine, was highlighted in U.S. News & World Report, discussing AI and healthcare.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping various industries, including healthcare. Experts at the U.S. News’ Healthcare of Tomorrow Policy Forum noted that while the technology holds promise for both healthcare providers and patients, there are key considerations and risks to keep in mind as it evolves.

One potential instance of high-risk comes from AI being used to make diagnoses, which is “the most frightening for providers,” says Matherne. He also pointed out that studies have shown AI diagnoses perform as well as, or even outperform, real physicians in certain health scenarios. “I think there’s huge opportunities, but I think it’s the scariest thing, for even young providers,” Matherne said.
