Linda Duska, MD, MPH, a professor in the Division of Gynecological Oncology, and Lauren Gilgannon, MD, an OB/GYN resident, were featured in MedPage Today and Medscape discussing research into opportunities to prevent ovarian cancer during unrelated surgeries.

Nearly a quarter of women with high-grade serous ovarian cancer had chances for risk-reducing surgery at least a year before diagnosis, a large retrospective study found.

Dr. Gilgannon and Dr. Duska noted that recognizing the fallopian tube as a likely source of serous epithelial ovarian cancer has prompted consideration of opportunistic salpingectomy (OS)—removal of the fallopian tubes—for risk reduction beyond just high-risk women.

“Given that OS is surgically safe, does not add significant procedure time, and minimally impacts ovarian function, it is well established that OS should be discussed with patients undergoing gynecologic surgery who have completed childbearing,” they wrote.
