Kim Penberthy, PhD, a professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, was featured locally, across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing the effects of false shooting reports.

On Monday, November 3, a false report of an active shooter on the UVA campus prompted a police response, and the resulting fear continues to linger on Grounds.

“Those hoaxes that we’ve seen don’t just scare, they train complacency.” In addition, “Those minutes of fear that people had, even if it was confused fear, even if it was like, is this real, is this not? That is still trauma,” Dr. Penberthy said.
