Kevin Pelphrey, PhD, a professor in the Department of Neurology and principal investigator of the NIH Autism Center for Excellence, was highlighted in USA Today and more than 50 newspapers nationwide for his insights on autism spectrum disorder.
Autism is “most often diagnosed in childhood, usually by ages 2 to 4,” said Dr. Pelphrey. He notes that early signs pediatricians and specialists may look for include delayed speech, limited eye contact, or repetitive behaviors.
However, autism can sometimes go undetected until adolescence or adulthood, particularly when traits are subtle or not widely recognized as indicators of autism. When autism is diagnosed in teens or adults, “it involves detailed developmental history, behavioral assessments and often self-reported experiences,” Dr. Pelphrey said.
