Kenneth Walsh, PhD, the Lockhart B. McGuire Professor of Internal Medicine and director of the Hematovascular Biology Center in the Robert M. Berne Cardiovascular Research Center, was featured on Earth.com discussing the link between vanishing Y chromosomes and heart disease in men.

With age, some men experience loss of the Y chromosome in certain cells, particularly white blood cells—a change Dr. Walsh has linked to an increased risk of heart disease.

“Loss of Y is killing a lot of men,” said Dr. Walsh. “Men live six years shorter than females, and an enormous amount of that mortality is due to their sex chromosome instability.”
