JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, a professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, was featured in The New York Times, MedPage Today, Healio and Yahoo discussing hormone therapy for women experiencing menopause.

At a recent FDA panel, a group of 12 physicians and researchers urged the agency to remove the black box warning on menopause hormone therapy, saying it deters women from effective treatment and causes unnecessary harm. The panelists shared cases of patients suffering severe symptoms—like hot flashes, painful sex, and suicidal thoughts—who avoided estrogen due to fear of the warning label.

Selected by FDA Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary, a strong proponent of hormone therapy, the experts echoed his belief that its benefits outweigh the risks.

“I am begging, we are all begging the F.D.A., please remove the black box warning,” said Dr. Pinkerton. She stated that she wanted the black box warning removed solely from local, low-dose vaginal estrogen products, as there is no evidence associating them with any harm.
