JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was featured in hundreds of outlets, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, CNN.com and U.S. News & World Report, discussing a newly approved medication to treat hot flashes.
Hot flashes and night sweats affect up to 80 percent of women during menopause. The FDA has approved Lynkuet, a new drug containing elinzanetant, to treat hot flashes and night sweats in menopausal women. The medication expands nonhormonal options and may also help with menopause-related sleep issues, though direct comparisons are still pending.
Dr. Pinkerton, one of the trial investigators, said studies of elinzanetant in postmenopausal women ages 40–65 showed symptom improvement within a week; after 12 weeks, over 70% of participants on the drug reported at least a 50% reduction in hot flashes, compared with about 40% on placebo.
