Jay W. Fox, PhD, was interviewed by CBS Saturday Morning about his mentorship of a high school student developing a potential cure for skin cancer. Dr. Fox is director of the School of Medicine Office of Research Core Administration and a professor in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology.
Teenage scientist Heman Bekele aims to cure melanoma—one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. He recently won the 3M Young Scientist Challenge for creating an affordable soap designed to treat skin cancer. His work drew the attention of Dr. Fox, who is now mentoring Bekele as he advances his research.
“He was certainly enthusiastic, more focused, more intent, and really seemed committed to learning as much as he could,” said Dr. Fox.
