Huilun (Helen) Wang, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher in the UVA Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, was featured across Virginia, and on TV stations nationally, highlighting her recent grant from the Alzheimer’s Association.
Dr. Wang has been awarded a $200,000 grant from the Alzheimer’s Association to study a key process in the brain—ER-associated degradation, or ERAD—that may contribute to Alzheimer’s. “It’s basically a protein degradation machine in the cell that controls protein quality,” says Wang. “Our ultimate goal is to see whether we can manipulate ERAD and use it as a target for patients with Alzheimer’s disease to slow down it’s progression,”
Alzheimer’s impacts almost 7 million Americans, and this figure is projected to nearly double by 2050.
