Costi Sifri, MD, professor in the Department of Medicine Division of Infectious Diseases and International Health and director of hospital epidemiology at UVA Health, was featured locally, across Virginia and on TV stations nationally discussing a federal grant to help University Medical Center improve its preparedness for infectious disease outbreaks.
The medical center has been awarded a $500,000 federal grant aimed at strengthening its ability to respond to major infectious disease outbreaks.
The investment is focused on readiness and on protecting both patients and healthcare workers. Hospital leaders say the funding will support preparedness efforts for high-consequence illnesses such as Ebola, Marburg virus, and avian influenza, while also expanding the hospital’s role as a designated Special Pathogen Treatment Center.
“Our hope is that this will put us in an even better place to be able to take care of patients should we see these types of infections emerge in our area,” said Dr. Sifri.
