Cate Varney, DO, an assistant professor in the UVA Department of Family Medicine, was highlighted in over 300 national media outlets in an Associated Press article about weight-loss medications.

More U.S. adults view the use of weight-loss medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and other brands as beneficial rather than harmful for individuals dealing with obesity or a weight-related health condition according to a new poll from the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research.

Obesity is recognized as a chronic condition that requires medical care. Patients using medications as an additional aid to help with weight loss may face criticism and be accused of “cheating,” according to Dr. Varney, who treats obesity patients. “It’s like telling somebody to nail a nail into a board and then giving one person a hammer and another person, you know, like a chopstick,” Varney said, adding, “we’re leveling the playing field with these medications.”
