Edibles are no longer limited to cannabis. A burgeoning market for gummies, chocolates, and other products claiming to contain psychedelic mushrooms is emerging, offering consumers a novel—and legal—way to experience a high.
So, what exactly is in mushroom edibles? “It could be anything,” says Dr. Michienzi, a medical toxicologist at the University of Virginia School of Medicine with expertise in mushroom gummies. Testing by Michienzi’s team, along with further analysis from federal regulators, has revealed that these products may contain a variety of undisclosed—and potentially harmful or illegal—ingredients. These include psilocybin, psilocin (a related compound classified as a Schedule I drug), kratom (an herb with opioid-like effects), and even prescription medications, such as stimulants.
