Future Manning Institute of Biotechnology
The groundbreaking of AstraZeneca’s new facility in Albemarle County, strengthened by its collaboration with the Paul and Diane Manning Institute of Biotechnology, was prominently featured across Virginia and on national television outlets.
The University of Virginia is welcoming the announcement of AstraZeneca’s new Albemarle County facility and anticipates a strong, collaborative partnership ahead.
“Having been part of AstraZeneca for many years, when you think about where to expand and grow, the number one question you ask first is, where’s the talent?” stated Mark Esser, PhD, who heads UVA’s Manning Institute of Biotechnology and formerly worked for AstraZeneca.
Esser remarked that he had been working to advance this partnership long before it materialized.
“I had been lobbying my friends at AstraZeneca to check out Virginia and Charlottesville, just having gone to University of Virginia and knowing what a strong talent base [with] UVA and the surrounding community with the community colleges,” Esser said.
When the decision to build a new plant in Albemarle County was announced, both the state and the company said UVA played a huge role in making it happen.
