Ann Kellams, MD, helping new mother with breastfeeding.

Ann Kellams, MD, an international board-certified lactation consultant and a professor in the Department of Pediatrics, wrote an article for The Conversation about the challenges breastfeeding parents face and how they can find support.

Inspired by her own experiences as a new mother and her patients’ feedback about breastfeeding challenges, Dr. Kellam became a board-certified physician in breastfeeding medicine and lactation medicine. She partnered with the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine and Reaching Our Sisters Everywhere, a nonprofit focused on supporting breastfeeding among Black families, and studied what it means to have a successful breastfeeding experience. Her research also explored what would help parents achieve breastfeeding goals, the impact of corporate influences, like commercial infant formula, and the importance of having support while breastfeeding.
