Anita Clayton, MD, professor and chair of UVA’s Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, was featured on TV stations nationally discussing factors that hinder treatment for depression.
According to Dr. Clayton, there has been a lot of stigma around mental health conditions. Antidepressants, and medication prescribed to help people with depression and anxiety disorders are under-prescribed because so many cases are missed.
“We need to stop having stigma against mental health conditions and instead be positive about helping people move forward and try to be in touch,” Dr. Clayton said. The first step in the right direction she says is screening; next is getting the medication or help that best suits the patient’s situation.
