As you all know, professionalism is one of the key ASPIRE values of the Health System.\u00a0 Professionalism is one of those qualities that we all admire, and that we demand from our peers, but we don\u2019t often stop to think about what it means.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Merriam-Webster defines it as follows: <\/span><\/div>\n
Professionalism (n<\/i>): 1) the conduct<\/a>, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession<\/a> or a professional<\/a> person. 2) the following of a profession (such as athletics) for gain or livelihood.<\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
At first glance, neither of these seems to capture what we commonly mean when we describe someone as being \u201cprofessional\u201d as a health care provider, and perhaps professionalism for us is something that is more obvious when it is missing.\u00a0 But another way to look at professionalism is to define what is valued in the particular profession. The UVA ASPIRE values enunciate \u201cdelivering excellent care through the lens of helpfulness, positivity, kindness and competency<\/span>\u201d.\u00a0 In our own health care providers, we expect an individual whose primary motivation is our welfare.\u00a0 We want someone who is a master of her craft, superior in his practice, but not superior in her demeanor.\u00a0 We also value healthcare providers who practice what Osler called aequanimitas<\/i> (in English equanimity), or evenness of mind, especially under stress.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n
\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n
Ours an inherently stressful occupation — stressful for our patients and families but also stressful for us as providers.\u00a0 Developing the trait of evenness in the face of stress is valuable for our patients and their families, but also for ourselves.\u00a0 The first step is recognizing the importance of equanimity, and recognizing when we are not as calm as we would like to be.\u00a0 Recognizing after the fact is good.\u00a0 Learning to recognize during is better.\u00a0 Learning to recognize conditions that will lead us to lose our cool, and learning how to improve our resilience is best.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n
