As a first year medical student I found our immunology and infectious disease system block fascinating, and then during my 4th year I did an elective in AI and really enjoyed it. Since AI is a field that I am considering for fellowship the Chrysalis program is a great way to network and learn more about what is happening in this field both clinically and academically.

Q: What was the application process like?
A: It required an essay stating my interest in the field of allergy/immunology and a letter of recommendation from the faculty here. No interviews or anything.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about the Program?
A: I am just excited to get to learn more about all the different directions in which this field is going. I think a conference is like an immersion experience, where you get to visit this world that you might one day join as a colleague and see if it feels right.

Q: What advice/encouragement would you give to pediatricians and internists considering fellowship training in this field?
A: Well I think I’m still on the receiving end of that! Since I’m only an intern, this is all very new to me. I think that we have a wonderful division of AI at UVA, both on the pediatric and adult side, and I think there are great opportunities for mentorship.

Q: What else would you like to share about your experience?
A: Nothing right now, to be honest. I have emailed with my assigned mentor for the program, but until I actually get there and experience it I don’t know what else to say. I’d be happy to report back afterwards.

Kate Donowitz

Q: What made you apply for the Chrysalis Project Program?
