James H. Moak, MD, an associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, was awarded the University of Virginia’s 16th annual John T. Casteen Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Faculty Leadership Award on March 26.

Since 2020, Dr. Moak has hosted a monthly virtual lecture series called Spanish Grand Rounds which aims to promote Spanish language skills among emergency physicians and foster collaboration between American emergency physicians and their counterparts in Spain and Latin America. The lecture series has involved guest speakers from nine different Spanish-speaking countries and audience members from as far away as Chile, Spain, France, and Israel. Talks have not only covered topics related to textbook emergency medicine, but also important social issues affecting the care of emergency department patients including mass shootings, the opioid epidemic, and mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. By advertising the series to applicants to UVA’s emergency medicine residency program, the program has seen an increase in Latino recruits from 3% to 27% and an increase in fluent or near fluent Spanish speakers from 5% to 21%. Dr. Moak will present these findings at the annual meeting of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine in Philadelphia on May 15.
