The School of Medicine is pleased to share some of the honors and awards that our accomplished faculty and trainees have received in recent months.
The American Academy of Microbiology has recognized several faculty for their achievements in research, education, and leadership. The Academy is the honorific leadership group and scientific think tank within the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), one of the largest life science societies in the world.
Alison Criss, PhD, a Harrison Distinguished Professor and vice chair in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology, and James Nataro, MD, PhD, MBA, former chair of the Department of Pediatrics and physician-in-chief for UVA Health Children’s, were elected as fellows to the American Academy of Microbiology. Election as a fellow is a highly selective process based on peer-review of their scientific achievements that have advanced microbiology. The fellows in the Class of 2026 represent 14 countries.
Amy Mathers, MD, the Bayer Corporation-Gerald L. Mandell Professor in Internal Medicine and professor of medicine and pathology, has received the ASM Award for Research or Leadership in Clinical Microbiology, for her integration of clinical service, research innovation, and national leadership that continues to advance the field of clinical microbiology. As an infectious diseases physician, her work addresses antimicrobial resistance in bacterial species.
The International Society for Therapeutic Ultrasound has bestowed awards on School of Medicine faculty at its 25th annual symposium in Trondheim, Norway. Natasha D. Sheybani, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, received the Frederic Lizzi Early Career Award for her efforts to advance diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound. Shayan Moosa, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Neurosurgery, was honored with the Early Career Clinical Investigator Award for his commitment to embracing the adoption of focused ultrasound into clinical practice.
Rounding out national and international recognition is the American Board of Internal Medicine’s appointment of Costi Sifri MD, as chair of the Infectious Disease Traditional, 10-Year Maintenance of Certification Exam Approval Committee for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2026.
In more accolades, Seth Yarboro, MD, professor and vice chair in the Department of Orthoaepedic Surgery was elected the 95th President of the Viginia Orthopaedic Society (VOS) at this year’s annual meeting in Roanoke, Virginia. Dr. Yaroboro is an orthopaedic trauma surgeon who started his career at UVA in 2012. Quanjun Cui, MD, the Gwo-Jaw Wang Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, received the 2026 Virginia Orthopaedic Society Career Award at the VOS meeting. Dr. Cui specializes in total hip and knee arthroplasty and osteonecrosis. His NIH-funded research focuses on stem cell and arthritis.
Colby Newson, MD, a resident in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was selected as one of nine recipients of the Panacea Financial Foundation’s 2026 grants and Natasha Sheybani, PhD, was recognized with an Early Career Scientist Award from the Southeastern Universities Research Association.
