The Sports Neuropsychology Society (SNS) presented Donna Broshek, PhD, with the 2026 Barth Distinguished Mentor Award in May. It is the Society’s highest honor awarded to a member who prioritizes mentoring and development of others in the field of sports neuropsychology. The inaugural Barth Distinguished Mentor Award in 2024 recognized Jeffrey Barth, PhD, professor emeritus in the UVA Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences, for his enduring legacy in mentorship. Dr. Broshek is the second SNS member to be honored with this biennial award named for Dr. Barth.
Dr. Broshek is the John Edward Fowler Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. She also serves as director of both the Neuropsychology Assessment Clinic and the Psychology Fellowship Program, chief of the Psychology Division, and vice chair of faculty affairs for the department. She completed her internship and postdoctoral fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Barth at UVA and continued a long working relationship and friendship until his death in 2025. Dr. Broshek is a past president of SNS and currently serves as executive director.
Throughout her career, Dr. Broshek has provided support and encouragement, offered constructive feedback, and fostered mentee development, serving as an inspiration to neuropsychology students at all levels of training. In nomination letters, Dr. Broshek was noted as an “ideal role model,” someone who many strive to emulate professionally and personally. She is described by her colleagues as a beloved, humble, authentic and dedicated mentor-clinician-scientist, who sees mentorship as an honor and privilege. Dr. Broshek has a reputation for always making time for others and encouraging the growth and success of mentees, which has been described as transformative. Her mentorship and leadership have inspired others to become mentors and leaders themselves through clinical work, research, and service.
