David C. Shonka, Jr., MD
David C. Shonka Jr., MD, an associate professor in the Department of Otolaryngology, Division of Head & Neck Oncologic & Microvascular Surgery, is one of 217 surgeons who earned the Focused Practice Designation (FPD) for Adult Complex Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery on the initial exam in April 2025. The exam consisted of 108 surgeons certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and 109 by the American Board of Surgery.
This is a new designation that recognizes specialized expertise in the field gained by dedicating a significant percentage of a surgeon’s practice to the care of patients with benign or malignant and functional or non-functional tumors of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
FPD is a voluntary process for surgeons who have met specific requirements beyond standard board certification, such as a high volume of complex cases and advanced training.
Congratulations Dr. Shonka!
