The American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) announced that A. Bobby Chhabra, MD, has officially taken office as the 80th President of the Society, effective at the close of the 2025 ASSH Annual Meeting held October 9-11 in Vancouver.

Dr. Chhabra, an internationally recognized leader in hand and upper extremity surgery, brings decades of experience in clinical care, education, and health system leadership to his new role. He is the Lillian T. Pratt Distinguished Professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Virginia, director of the UVA Health Orthopaedic Center, and a team physician for the UVA Department of Athletics.

“Our strength as a Society lies in our unity,” said Dr. Chhabra. “By embracing diverse perspectives, fostering inclusion, and working together across disciplines, we can elevate the quality of care we provide and advance the future of hand surgery. I am honored to serve as President and look forward to building on the collective expertise, passion, and dedication of our members to make a lasting impact.”

Dr. Chhabra is a longtime member and volunteer of ASSH. He joined the Society in 2007 and has served on more than 15 committees and taskforces. As President of ASSH, Dr. Chhabra will lead strategic initiatives focused on unifying ASSH and the hand surgery community, including those in private practice, APPs, young surgeons, and other underrepresented groups.

Dr. Chhabra succeeds Tamara D. Rozental, MD, who served as the 79th President of ASSH and will continue to serve on the Council as Immediate Past President.

“Bobby leads with authenticity and care,” said ASSH CEO Melissa A. Garcia. “He listens first, brings people together, and encourages others to step into leadership with confidence. His steady hand and generous spirit will guide ASSH into a year of meaningful connection and shared growth.”
