Medical Scientist Training ProgramThe UVA Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) educates a highly selective group of students who graduate with both MD and PhD degrees. The program has secured a prestigious five-year T32 award from the NIH National Institute of General Medical Sciences that continues a remarkable legacy of NIH funding since 1977.

The renewal award marks more than 50 years of continuous funding of the UVA training program that helps train the next generation physician-scientists. The MSTP will receive $3.85 million from the NIH, which together with funding from the School of Medicine, will support the trainees in their educational pursuits.

The award is a major milestone for the program and a testament to the strength of our training environment, the exceptional caliber of our students, and the dedication of our outstanding faculty. NIH support brings critical resources to support education and development of these physician-scientists and provides important national recognition.

The MSTP students’ academic achievements, research excellence, and ongoing commitment to the dual mission of advancing science and medicine continues to inspire and elevate the program.

The MSTP has 53 active student trainees in the School of Medicine who will benefit from the award. The program is led by co-directors Mariano Garcia-Blanco, MD, PHD, professor and chair of the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology and Judith Woodfolk, MBChB, PhD, professor in the Department of Medicine.
