Graduate Medical Education Programs Reaccredited with Outstanding Marks

July 16, 2024 by pmb3fz@virginia.edu

We are delighted to announce that our Graduate Medical Education (GME) training programs earned Continued Accreditation status with zero citations and zero areas for improvement from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

“This is really a remarkable accomplishment given the size of our GME enterprise and recent leadership changes, and is a credit to the outstanding work of our dedicated program directors and coordinators, GME office staff, Susan Kirk, MD [former associate dean for GME] and Brad Kesser, MD [former interim Designated Institutional Officer], as well as UVA Health leadership’s support of our GME programs,” says Monica Lawrence, MD, Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education and UVA Health Designated Institutional Official.

The GME programs offer training to more than 800 residents and fellows (also referred to as “housestaff”) in 84 ACGME-accredited specialties and subspecialties. The Medical Center and School of Medicine work together to provide the diverse patient population, dedicated faculty, excellent clinical and basic science departments, and nationally recognized research programs required to create an environment optimal for learning and career development. At UVA, the GME community is committed to the well-being of its trainees, who are doctors making the transition from being students to being specialists.

School of Medicine Dean Melina Kibbe proudly comments, “Our GME program is one of the strongest in the nation and attracts a large number of highly competitive applicants from across the country. This flawless accreditation is a testament to the dedication of our department chairs, attending faculty, GME staff, and our current trainees who provide a climate for learning that has remained a vital and unique part of the program. I’m so pleased to be part of a teaching program with a long tradition of developing physicians of the highest caliber who excel in all aspects of patient care and research.”

“An educational mission milestone!” touts UVA Health University Medical Center CEO Wendy Horton. “Fantastic news! Achieving this was no small feat, and I know the hard work that went into it. A big congratulations to the entire team!”
