Andrew Muck, MD, MBA, professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine and Air Force veteran, has received the Patriotic Employer Award, a national recognition from the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a U.S. Department of Defense program.
The ESGR award recognizes Dr. Muck’s support of citizen warriors serving in the National Guard or Reserve through measures like flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families, and granting leaves of absence if needed. Department of Defense ESGR Ombudsman Chuck Boles, MA, presented Dr. Muck with a certificate and lapel pin at a surprise ceremony on Friday, May 23.

“I’m honored to receive the Patriotic Employer Award, as supporting our colleagues serving in the National Guard and Reserve is deeply personal and meaningful to me. Their commitment deserves our full support, and I’m proud UVA shares this dedication,” said Dr. Muck. “This recognition also reflects UVA’s longstanding commitment, along with generations of our graduates, to upholding and supporting the highest ideals of our country.”
Dr. Muck served in the United States Air Force with deployments in support of both Operation Iraqi Freedom and as a Critical Care Air Transport Physician in Operation Enduring Freedom. The School of Medicine is grateful for his service to our Nation and for all of our team member veterans. We extend our deepest appreciation to them and for those who continue to serve in the National Guard or Reserve.
