The School of Medicine celebrated its 20th Annual New Faculty Retreat on September 17 at Newcomb Hall. Of the 170 new faculty hired this past year, nearly 100 attended the event, marking a milestone year for new faculty to connect with one another and leadership, learn about the School, and celebrate the beginning of their journey at UVA.

“We love welcoming and gathering our new faculty members at this annual informative networking event! Every year, amazing personal and professional collaborations arise from this celebration,” noted Susan M. Pollart, MD, the Ruth E. Murdaugh Professor of Family Medicine and Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.

The day began with opening remarks from Interim Dean Colin Derdeyn, MD, followed by department chairs introducing their new faculty. Reflecting on his experience, Dean Derdeyn said, “…each Chair’s pride, excitement and appreciation for each new faculty member was obvious and powerful (it took over an hour to get through everyone!), but – it was inspiring to see. These new faculty are the future of our medical school. It is exciting to think about how they will make us better.”

Director of Faculty Development Monique Dufour, PhD, facilitated the retreat, which included sessions on the structure of the School of Medicine and the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development, peer-consultant small groups on academic advancement, and introductions to key leaders and resources that will support faculty as they launch their UVA careers.

This retreat is not just about orientation; it is about connection. Faculty left with new colleagues, new insights, and new pathways for growth. Welcome to all of our new faculty, and thank you to everyone who helped make this milestone retreat such an energizing start to our colleagues’ careers.
