\u2022 Jeff Elias Named 2018 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year<\/p>\n

The UVA Licensing & Ventures Group has named W. Jeffrey Elias, MD, Professor of Neurological Surgery, the 2018 Edlich-Henderson Innovator of the Year, an award given to university faculty members whose research is making a major impact on society. Elias is recognized for pioneering the use of\u00a0focused ultrasound to treat essential tremor, and for leading the clinical trial that resulted in Food and Drug Administration approval of the approach to treat the condition.<\/p>\n

\u2022 195 UVA Physicians Chosen for ‘Best Doctors in America’ List<\/p>\n

\u2022 Anemia Discovery Offers New Targets to Treat Fatigue in Millions<\/p>\n

A new discovery from the UVA School of Medicine revealed a previously unknown clockwork mechanism within the body that controls the creation of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. The finding sheds light on iron-restricted anemias that leave millions of people weak, tired and unable to concentrate \u2013 and it may point the way to better treatments as well.<\/p>\n

Adam Goldfarb, MD, Professor of Pathology, and his colleagues made the discovery while seeking to better understand why iron-restricted anemias cause the body to create insufficient numbers of vital red blood cells.<\/p>\n

The findings have been published in the\u00a0Journal of Experimental Medicine.<\/p>\n
