\u2022 US News & World Report Ranks UVA As No. 1 Hospital in Virginia<\/p>\n

\n

The 2017-18 U.S. News & World Report \u201cBest Hospitals\u201d guide rates University of Virginia Medical Center as the No. 1 hospital in Virginia and honors 11 UVA specialties as among the best in the U.S. This is the second consecutive year UVA tops the Virginia hospital list.<\/p>\n

Six specialties are rated among the top 50 nationally:
\n– Cancer: 30th
\n– Ear, nose and throat: 32nd
\n– Orthopedics: 33rd
\n– Urology: 35th
\n– Diabetes and endocrinology: 44th
\n– Cardiology and heart surgery: 50th<\/p>\n

Four additional specialties are recognized as \u201chigh-performing,\u201d rating among the top 10 percent nationally of their respective specialties:
\n– Gastroenterology & GI surgery
\n– Nephrology
\n– Neurology & neurosurgery
\n– Pulmonology<\/p>\n

\u2022 UVA Researchers Publish Paper on Gynecological Carcinomas<\/p>\n

\u201cMismatch Repair Status and PD-L1 Expression in Clear Cell Carcinomas of the Ovary and Endometrium” has been published in the journal Modern Pathology.<\/p>\n

The paper describes the findings of a study detailing the relationship between mismatch repair and PD-L1 expression in gynecologic clear cell carcinomas, which represent a rare and difficult to treat subset of ovarian and endometrial carcinomas. The researchers identified tumoral PD-L1 expression in over three-quarters of clear cell cancers in the endometrium and nearly half of tumors from the ovary, suggesting that immunotherapy targeting the PD-1\/PD-L1 axis may be of utility in these patients. Interestingly, PD-L1 expression was not exclusively seen in tumors with mismatch repair deficiency, suggesting that clear cell morphology may be a marker for immunotherapeutic response irrespective of mismatch repair status.<\/p>\n
