{"id":484,"date":"2017-06-23T13:14:40","date_gmt":"2017-06-23T13:14:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/fac-dev-blog\/?p=484"},"modified":"2020-03-18T15:31:33","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T19:31:33","slug":"484","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/fac-dev-blog\/2017\/06\/23\/484\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty News Weekly Round-Up, June 23"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UVA School of Medicine Faculty News Weekly Round-Up<br \/>\nJune 23<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong><strong>Biologist Probes How Stubborn Malaria Bug Adapts to Evade Drug Treatments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About half a million people die each year from malaria, mostly children under the age of 5 who have not developed the ability to fight off the parasite that causes the disease. The danger zone is largely along Earth\u2019s equatorial band, affecting about 3.2 billion people in large regions of Africa, South America and Asia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people in the developed world believe that the malaria problem has been largely solved, but in fact millions of people are infected and get sick each year,\u201d said Jennifer G\u00fcler, a University of Virginia biologist who studies the malaria parasite\u2019s ability to develop drug resistance. \u201cIt\u2019s an ongoing problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working with researchers in UVA\u2019s School of Medicine and the School of Engineering and Applied Science, G\u00fcler is investigating the molecular mechanisms that underlie the parasite\u2019s ability to evolve genetic and metabolic changes that allow it to survive drug exposure. The researchers are using a range of innovative molecular, biochemical and cellular techniques, and computational modeling, to make visible, and understandable, the minute changes that occur within the parasite.
