{"id":129,"date":"2017-05-19T18:26:49","date_gmt":"2017-05-19T18:26:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/fac-dev-blog\/?p=129"},"modified":"2020-03-18T16:35:45","modified_gmt":"2020-03-18T20:35:45","slug":"faculty-news-round-up-may-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.med.virginia.edu\/fac-dev-blog\/2017\/05\/19\/faculty-news-round-up-may-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Faculty News Round-Up, May 19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UVA School of Medicine Faculty News Weekly Round-Up<br \/>\nMay 19<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Blood Discovery Could Benefit Preemies, Help End Platelet Shortages<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A new discovery from the\u00a0UVA School of Medicine may be the key to stopping shortages of these vital blood-clotting cells, cells that can represent the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n<p>The finding also could offer big benefits for premature babies, opening the door to new treatments for a serious condition called neonatal thrombocytopenia that affects up to 30 percent of babies in neonatal intensive care units.<\/p>\n<p>The UVA researchers have identified a \u201cmaster switch\u201d that they may be able to manipulate to overcome the obstacles that have prevented doctors from producing platelets in large quantities outside the body. \u201cThe platelet supply is limited and the demand is growing,\u201d said researcher Adam Goldfarb, MD, of UVA\u2019s Department of Pathology. \u201cThe quantities we can produce outside the body are very, very small, and the inability to scale up right now is a major roadblock.
