“This is the best workshop I have attended at UVA!”
Do people understand your research when you talk about it? You’re an expert researcher; are you also an expert communicator? Have you experienced the glazed eye response from congressional panels, conference attendees, funding organizations, or students? If so, perhaps you could use a communication update.
Join us for the second offering of UVA’s “Speaking of Research” communication workshop. You will learn straightforward techniques to communicate your research to any audience. Sessions will allow you to practice speaking about your research in an engaged and supportive environment. Attendees at our first session agreed: “All research faculty should take this workshop!!!”
The workshop will include:
• Small group activities
• Short, in-session exercises to help assess, speak to and motivate non-specialist audiences
• Small group coaching feedback sessions on your current three-minute research pitch
• Key concepts and tools you can use to communicate your research more effectively to multiple audiences
Workshop sessions are designed to help you:
• Fine tune your audience analysis skills
• Minimize jargon and maximize message impact
• Design messages audiences will hear, understand and act upon
• Practice, practice, practice—with session coaches and inter-/intra-disciplinary peers
This event is co-sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Faculty Development Office in the School of Medicine.
