Finding Your Voice (Provided by the Committee on Women in Medicine and Science – COWIMS)

Moderated by: Barb Mann, PhD, Associate Professor of Medicine and Evelyn Aboagye, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics

Panelists include: Anja Bielinsky, PhD, Professor and Chair of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics; Janet Cross, PhD, Associate Dean for Graduate and Medical Scientist Programs and Associate Professor of Medical Education and Pathology; and Ann Kellams, MD, Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs and Professor of Pediatrics

Description/learning outcomes: This workshop will be a panel discussion regarding strategies for more effective communication and assertiveness, and how to position yourself as an advocate for issues that are central to your career success and satisfaction, and core values. By the end of this learning activity, participants will be able to:

  • Navigate situations when they are not being heard or recognized.
  • List advice and tips for communicating in an effective, assertive manner.
  • Identify skills that are essential for getting a seat at the table and creating opportunities in which they are able to influence or contribute to issues that are important to them.
  • Discuss strategies and tips for being the “only” in the room (only woman or gender identity, only person of color or ethnicity).
