Two UVA radiology residency programs have set themselves apart in the 2025-2026 Doximity Residency Navigator: UVA’s Interventional Radiology Integrated (IR-Integrated) Residency was ranked No. 1 in the nation, while UVA’s Diagnostic Radiology (DR) Residency was ranked No. 1 among Virginia programs and No. 19 in the nation.
The rankings are created by the medical networking website Doximity, and incorporate a combination of resident and alumni satisfaction data, reputation data, and objective data.

IR-Integrated Residency: Advancing the Field
In the Division of Interventional Radiology, the IR-Integrated Residency program’s No.1 national ranking serves as a testament to past and present members who dedicated themselves to advancing the field of minimally invasive procedures and passing on their expertise to the next generations.
“We are grateful for this recognition and deeply indebted to our residents, past fellows, nurses, and technologists for their commitment to elevating IR at UVA and contributing to our mission,” said IR-Integrated Residency Program Director Luke Wilkins, MD, professor of radiology and medical imaging.
“There is a long and storied legacy of interventional radiology at the University of Virginia that is due in part to our long tradition of high-quality clinical care, innovative and complex cases, and faculty deeply committed to excellence.”
In fact, UVA Radiology was at the forefront of IR education for residents more than two decades ago. In 2000, the department matched its first medical student into a pioneering six-year Vascular and Interventional Radiology pathway. It served as inspiration for the current IR-Integrated Residency, which was approved in 2012 as an ACGME-accredited training program. In 2019, the IR Division further bolstered its clinical and educational capabilities when it moved into a new hospital space next to the operating room, featuring eight procedure rooms and state-of-the-art imaging equipment.

DR Residency: A History of Excellence
It’s been nearly 90 years since 1936, when UVA graduated its first DR residents. Since then, the DR Residency has cemented itself as a top program — No.1 in Virginia and No. 19 in the United States.
“Our training environment is among the best in the country,” said DR Residency Program Director Joe Donahue, MD, associate professor of radiology and medical imaging, “and that’s only possible through our great culture – which combines rigorous training with genuine support for resident growth, scholarship, and well-being.”
This year’s rankings are the latest in a multi-year streak of UVA being named a top 20 diagnostic radiology residency in the country.
“Our program’s continued recognition is a signal that our graduates are widely respected,” said Dr. Donahue.
