During Wellness Month programming in September, a group of 20 medical students participated in the Farm-to-Table Retreat at the scenic Morven Farms. This thoughtfully designed event offered students a hands-on, immersive experience focused on holistic well-being, culinary education, and community building.

Participants traveled to the Morven Sustainability Lab and began the afternoon by harvesting fresh vegetables from Morven’s garden, learning about seasonal produce and sustainable food practices. They then transitioned to the kitchen lab, where they prepared a flavorful and nourishing Kimchi Fried Rice using introductory culinary medicine techniques. The cooking session emphasized practical skills for preparing healthy meals at home, empowering students to take charge of their nutrition in a fun and collaborative setting.

Following the shared meal, students had the opportunity to explore the farm’s beautiful grounds, fostering a deeper connection with nature and one another. This event not only promoted physical wellness through nutritious cooking, but also supported emotional and social well-being by creating space for students to relax, connect, and recharge together.

Fourth-year medical student Bess Renjilian has attended the Farm-to-Table Retreat every year since its inception, making it a personal tradition during Wellness Month. For her, the event is more than just a break from the classroom — it’s a meaningful reminder to practice the same wellness principles she hopes to share with future patients.

“As an aspiring primary care physician, it’s easy to tell patients that getting outside, eating fresh food, and socializing can make them happier and healthier, but sometimes it’s hard to remind myself to do those things myself.”

Her reflection captures the spirit of the retreat: a chance for students to reconnect with nature, nourish their bodies, and build community — all while reinforcing the importance of self-care in the medical profession.
