This week, we celebrate Graduate Medical Education (GME) Trainee Appreciation Week in honor of our amazing residents and fellows, who deliver exceptional patient care across the health system every day. Our GME trainees are an outstanding group of 848 physicians engaged in 130 UVA training programs. They are invaluable members of our healthcare team who partner with our faculty and staff to ensure that patients receive high-quality, compassionate care in the face of complex medical situations.

“Our residents and fellows are both the heart and the hands of our academic medical center. Through their hard work, they demonstrate resiliency, compassion and dedication to their patients, their training, and to each other as colleagues,” said Monica Lawrence, MD, associate dean for graduate medical education at the School of Medicine and UVA Health designated institutional official.
“Their contributions matter deeply — to our patients, to our institution, and to the future of medicine. I am thrilled for this opportunity to recognize and celebrate them.”
In addition to their clinical duties, trainees mentor medical students, bolster research innovation, and engage with our community. Their devotion to the rigorous training required for their chosen specialty, as well as their commitment to advancing all four SOM mission areas, is respected and appreciated. We are grateful not only for their dedication, but also for the tremendous support they receive from their families and friends.
Please join us in thanking our residents and fellows for their contributions to caring for our patients, colleagues, and community.
