The C. Richard Bowman Fund was established in the memory of Dick Bowman, MD, a 1974 graduate of UVA School of Medicine who had planned to pursue a fellowship in infectious diseases. Dr. Bowman was dedicated to the constant pursuit of excellence in clinical medicine and demonstrated a spirit and ideals which impressed his fellow students, physicians, family and friends during his relatively short lifetime. The University Trustees of the Bowman Fund are Meg Keeley, MD, Senior Associate Dean for Education and Professor of Pediatrics and Gene McGahren, MD, Professor of Surgery. The Bowman events are organized with the UVA Medical Alumni Association.
The 48th Annual Bowman Lecture was delivered on October 24 at the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds by Kate McManus, MD. In honor of Dr. Bowman, the annual lecture focuses on an infectious disease topic and McManus’s presentation was titled, “From Bedside to Policy: Patient Stories Inspiring HIV Research.” The Bowman Scholars were recognized at the lecture and Sage Royston was presented with the 2025 Bowman Scholarship. Dr. Keeley noted, “It is a privilege each year for us to honor the inspiration we receive from both the memory of Dr. Bowman and from our exceptional students.”
