The UVA Department of Surgery’s Division of Vascular Surgery has achieved accreditation for a new residency program. The Integrated (0–5) Vascular Surgery Residency Program at the University of Virginia Medical Center has been granted Initial Accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), effective April 16, 2026.
This is a significant milestone for the Department of Surgery and reflects a strong, collaborative effort across faculty, trainees, and institutional leadership. The program is approved for a total of five residents (one per year), with recruitment beginning in the 2026–2027 academic year for the 2027 Match. The first intern will begin training in July 2027.
Behzad Farivar, MD, associate professor in the Department of Surgery, will serve as program director and will lead the continued development of the program in close partnership with departmental and institutional leaders. The Department of Surgery looks forward to welcoming their first trainees and building a program that will have lasting impact locally and nationally.
