The Center for Excellence in Education (CEE) Teaching Committee hosted an inaugural Teaching Bootcamp for Residents and Fellows on October 17, 2024. Drawing over 50 trainees across diverse specialties within the UVA Health system, the event highlighted the commitment to education present among UVA’s faculty and trainee population.

“The Center of Excellence in Education Teaching Committee recognized a gap in access to teaching-focused curricula for residents and fellows. This bootcamp was designed to bridge that gap, leveraging the exceptional educational expertise within the medical school to cultivate essential teaching skills in our residents and fellows,” stated Heath Patel, MD, co-chair of the teaching committee. “We take great pride in our longstanding tradition of excellence in medical education at UVA, and this bootcamp exemplifies our continued commitment to preparing housestaff to be both skilled clinicians and educators.”

The bootcamp aimed to equip trainees with essential teaching skills across the clinical settings. Throughout the program, participants delved into a variety of practices such as feedback, expectation setting, growth mindset, and bedside teaching. Participants worked through several actionable frameworks and role-playing scenarios to practice applying the concepts to their work.

Feedback from attendees highlighted the program’s impact, with many praising the interactive, hands-on nature of the program and requesting future versions of the event.
