UVA Surgery, Anesthesiology, Pathology, and the Boys & Girls Club of Central Virginia recently teamed up to host an annual community event that welcomes students to Grounds for a hands-on day of learning. This year’s Medical Day Camp was held on November 4, 2024, in the UVA Health Education Resource Center and provided 30 middle school students the opportunity to explore healthcare through interactive workshops.
The morning started with a light breakfast and an introduction to the different specialties represented, followed by a Q&A with the students. Then, the students were separated into smaller groups that rotated through hands-on learning stations. Working with faculty and residents, they practiced airway intubation, CPR, suturing, and organ identification through a hands-on anatomy lab.
This event was organized by the JEDI Council and the Housestaff Council for Diversity and Inclusion, or HCDI, and is part of a series of community outreach events focused on opening medical career pathways for Charlottesville’s youth. Organizers extend their appreciation to all the volunteers from the Departments of Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Pathology who led the workshops and made this event possible.
