Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month

September 18, 2024 by jta6n@virginia.edu

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. From September 15 to October 15, we proudly celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to honor the invaluable contributions Hispanic/Latino Americans have made at UVA Health and beyond. This year’s national theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” reflects our commitment to advancing inclusive care for all.

Today, over 1 out of 10 Virginian residents is Latino, with a projected growth to 1.6 million by the year 2030 (Virginia Latino Advisory Board). As our state’s Latino population continues to grow, UVA Health is committed to our team members and our patients in fostering healthy communities and belonging for all. We know that providing medical care that aligns with patients’ cultural and linguistic backgrounds enhances the quality of healthcare and improves patient outcomes. We are proud of your efforts to create a more inclusive workplace and better care for the diverse communities we serve, including:

  • The Latino Health Initiative (LHI): Led by Dr. Max Luna, LHI shapes the present and future of health education, affordable healthcare services, and representation for our Spanish-speaking community members. Learn more.
  • Interpretation and Translation Services: UVA Health offers free around-the-clock interpreter services to patients and their families. We are particularly proud of recent efforts by our UVA Community Health team of Cultural Ambassadors, led by Jared Rice, System Director for Nursing Support Services for UVA Health. This growing team advocates for our Limited English Proficiency patients. Learn more.
  • Education and Celebration: We look forward to learning and celebrating together through several events and educational programs hosted by our Office of Diversity Equity and Inclusion and LHI. Learn More.

Thank you for working together to shape the future of healthcare by fostering inclusivity and supporting our growing Latino community. By working as one UVA Health Team, we are transforming health and inspiring hope for all Virginians and beyond.
